Still Lives
A memoir of Gaza
Marilyn Garson
In Still Lives, Marilyn Garson writes about her experiences as an aid worker in Gaza from 2011-2015, including the 2014 Israeli invasion.
She witnessed the impact of urban assault and massive civilian displacement. In that time her identity as a Jewish supporter of Palestinian rights was strengthened and deepened.
Her experiences upon returning home to New Zealand are covered in the companion volume Jewish Not Zionist, also published by Interventions.
“In this moving and stunningly eloquent memoir, Marilyn Garson fulfils her promise ‘to tell what she saw’ during her four years in Gaza as a Jewish humanitarian worker and social entrepreneur.”
“It is a unique experience to read Marilyn Garson’s book about her experiences in Gaza in 2011-2015 while hearing daily and hourly reports of Israel’s destruction of the population and environment of Gaza in 2025. It gives the lie to the idea that it all started in 2023.”
